Hiren’s Boot CD is a boot CD containing various diagnostic programs such as partitioning agents, system performance benchmarks, disk cloning and imaging tools, data recovery tools, MBR tools, BIOS tools, and many others for fixing various computer problems. An easy way to start is to make a bootable Linux external usb HDD -- an old laptop HDD with SATA-->USB2/3 connector works well enough. Install say VBOX / vmware on it then add a Windows VM -- windows PE or any other version.
Hi, i've searched everywhere and have found many problems similar to mine but none with a solution i can apply. Last night my computer was ravaged by a virus. I ran malwarebytes, detected some viruses which included registry entries, deleted them and when it was done was asked to reboot.
Also recieved a message saying some things couldn't be removed. When i restarted, xp got to the bit just before the login page and rebooted.
It does this continuously. It also does this in every form of safe mode.
I ran kaspersky rescue disk and deleted 3 more trojans, but still xp got to the same place and the computer restarted. When i tell the computer not to restart on system failure i get an error message something along the lines of 'fatal error, login process failed at (whole heap of numbers)'or something like that. Figuring that the virus or possible the registry entries i deleted had damaged my system i have been trying to run a windows xp recovery disk, but when i press r for repair my c drive is actually my e drive that i use for storage that doesn't contain my system files. From what i have been able to figure out, this is because my c drive is a sata drive and not recognised by windows xp recovery.
I've read people have been able to go into bios and make it so that the drive is read as ide (at this point i really don't know what i'm talking about), but when i go into bios it says sata is enabled in ide mode. Basically i am at my wits end and am not even sure if i am on the right track to solving my problem, but i do think doing a repair install is probably my best bet. Any ideas how i can make my recovery disk see my hard drive?
Tl;dr system was stuffed by virus, won't boot into windows, can't run repair because sata drive isn't recognised. You can change the controller settings in the BIOS. Restart the computer and enter the BIOS.
The location and type of setting will vary with the make and model of the motherboard. Here are some: MAIN menu SATA Mode Select IDE Mode instead of AHCI Mode ADAVANCED or ADVANCED (BIOS) SETTINGS menu SATA Drive Configuration Select Compatibility (Mode) instead of AHCI (Mode) (BIOS) ADVANCED menu SATA Disable Auto Enable Combination Set to PATA mode INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS menu IDE Function Setup OnChip IDE = Disabled SATA DMA transfer = Enabled INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS menu Onboard Device SATA = Disabled. Turns out my floppy drive isn't working but i managed to slipstream the drivers into the xp cd. I got the drivers from the motherboard website after checking the make of the board on the board itself. I see the drivers load up along with the various other drivers but alas my second hard drive is coming up as c: and when i change to d: and type dir at the prompt it says there is an error with directory enumeration. Before i slipstreamed the drivers it simply assumed d: was a floppy or cd drive with nothing inserted.
